He is considered one of the foremost painters in 19th century America and a preeminent figure in American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. 1613-1675 Dutch Gerard Dou Locations Dutch genre and portrait painter of Leiden. The son of a glass painter, he was apprenticed to an engraver and worked from 1628 to 1631 in the studio of the young Rembrandt. Although he occasionally borrowed Rembrandt themes, he was more detailed and meticulous in his execution. His scenes of domestic, middle-class life were tremendously popular and often imitated. Among his most famous works are Evening Light (Rijks Mus.), Young Man (The Hague), The Cook (Louvre), and a self-portrait (Metropolitan Mus.).
George Inness
1825-1894 George Inness Galleries George Inness (May 1, 1825 -August 3, 1894), was an American landscape painter; born in Newburgh, New York; died at Bridge of Allan in Scotland. His work was influenced, in turn, by that of the old masters, the Hudson River school, the Barbizon school, and, finally, by the theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, whose spiritualism found vivid expression in the work of Inness' maturity. He is best known for these mature works that helped define the Tonalist movement. Inness was the fifth of thirteen children born to John Williams Inness, a farmer, and his wife, Clarissa Baldwin. His family moved to Newark, New Jersey when he was about five years of age. In 1839 he studied for several months with an itinerant painter, John Jesse Barker. In his teens, Inness worked as a map engraver in New York City. During this time he attracted the attention of French landscape painter Regis François Gignoux, with whom he subsequently studied. Throughout the mid-1840s he also attended classes at the National Academy of Design, and studied the work of Hudson River School artists Thomas Cole and Asher Durand; "If", Inness later recalled thinking, "these two can be combined, I will try." Concurrent with these studies Inness opened his first studio in New York. In 1849 Inness married Delia Miller, who died a few months later. The next year he married Elizabeth Abigail Hart, with whom he would have six children.

1812-1846 Per Gabriel Wickenberg, född 1 oktober 1812 i Malmö, död 19 december 1846 i Pau, var en svensk konstnär. Per Wickenberg kom från enkla förhållanden, hans far var fanjunkare, men visade tidigt en talang för teckning och måleri. 1831 skedde en insamling till hans förmån i Malmö, mend vars hjälp han fick möjlighet att komma till Stockholm att studera konst. Han besvärades tidigt av en ögonsjukdom, och med hjälp av bidrag från Konstföreningen i Stockholm fick han 1836 hjälp att resa till Tyskland för att söka bot. Efter tillfrisknandet valde han att stanna en tid i Berlin och vann där ett gott erkännande för sina tavlor. 1838 reste han till Paris, och vann där samma år guldmedalj på salongen för sin tavla "Nordiskt vinterlandskap". Wickenberg blev 1839 agre och 1842 ledamot av Konstakademien, under det att han stannade kvar i Paris. Wickenbergs ögonsjukdom återkom dock, och han insjuknade även i tuberkulos. Vintern 1843-44 uppehöll han sig i Nice, för att kurera sig, men förgåves, och 1846 avled han, bara 34 år gammal. 1842 tilldelades han Vasaorden och Hederslegionens kors.
